Frequently Asked Questions

What is personal coaching all about?

Coaching can be described as a partnership that enables inviduals to gain clarity about life goals and develop action plans to move forward.  Coaching is not mentoring, counseling/therapy, or consulting.   Coaching is action-oriented and focused on the present and future.

In general…

Counseling/therapy is usually about the past – healing previous wounds “Lets talk about how your childhood influenced your career path…”
Consulting involves providing a client with answers in the form of direction, solutions, and information “You should solve this problem in this way based on my expertise…”
Mentoring involves sharing guidance and advice based on personal experience “Based on my time in that role, this is the approach that will yield the best result…”

Coaching has a laser focus on the needs/wants of the client and uses self-reflection to help the individual find their own answers.   Clients determine the goals and commit to the action required to achieve them; coaches keep clients accountable.  If we agree to establish a coaching relationship and I find that you are in need of Counseling support, I will refer you to an individual who is trained to meet your needs as I am not.

Is a meeting with a coach like talking with your good friend?

Nope.  Not really.  We can be friendly, but a coaching relationship isn’t a friendship.  My job is to drive accountability and serve as an advocate to push for clarity while challenging you.  I am not, however, your momma, daddy, auntie, girlfriend, or best bud so I won’t tell you what to do or dole out punitive actions if you fail to honor your commitments.  I will help you explore your options to converge on the best way to achieve your goals.  My focus will be to change your thoughts as a foundation to change behavior and get results.  I want to light a fire within you rather than beneath you; such fires are much easier to keep burning in the long term.  All that being said, I’m generally a nice person and our sessions may be uncomfortable at times given the questions I’ll pose, but never unpleasant. At least that is the hope, right?

What is the ROI on coaching?

Coaching can yield improved effectiveness, confidence, autonomy, creativity, clarity, collaboration, and relationships.  Seriously.  Read all about it here.

Are you the right coach for me?

Maybe – it depends.  If you are action-oriented, self-aware, appreciative of recommendations drawn from the world of research studies/empirical data and you are…

  • looking for a way to better manage work and life
  • exploring opportunities to return to the workforce after a hiatus
  • examining positions in the hope of reinventing your career
  • evaluating ways to more fully honor your priorities
  • looking for ways to be more productive on a regular basis
  • wondering if a dream can really become reality (e.g. writing a book, starting a business, moving to a new location, etc)

… then I could be the right coach for you.

I am uniquely equipped and called to serve early-to-mid career technical professionals (i.e. engineers, scientists, and technology leaders) navigating the challenges of work-life integration and the pressures of 24×7 connectivity.  My formal engineering education (BEE, BS, and PhD) and my 15+ years of experience as a technologist, educator and manager provide me with credible insight about my client population.  I additionally have relevant firsthand knowledge about the landscape for technical professionals in corporate, governmental, and academic environments.   Most importantly, I have a passion for supporting others as they reconcile logic, emotion and intuition to lead a better life.

Who do I view as my ideal clients?

My ideal clients are keenly focused on the demands of work and home but often fail to prioritize their own needs and wants.    They are very ‘busy’ but not nearly as productive.  They have an affinity for organization but are often fringed by chaos.  My ideal clients have not maximized their potential to lead intentional, fulfilling lives because they have difficulty investing in the activities that routinely energize, inspire, or sustain them personally and professionally.   My coaching will position my clients to establish and honor self-commitments with confidence; this will, in turn, enable them to achieve their goals and consistently give their best to others.

When should I seek the services of a coach?

Seek coaching when you:

  • Feel stuck
  • Are willing to play an active role in your learning and desire deep, long-lasting results
  • Want to do something new
  • Want to drive changes to benefit your organization, family, or self
  • Want one-on-one interaction with an unbiased party
  • Want to improve the quality of your life

Am I a coachable client?

Not everyone is ready for coaching.  You are coachable if…

  1. You are open to feedback from an independent, objective party
  2. You know what you want to achieve (just not how to do it)
  3. You are willing to create positive change
  4. You are in need of unbiased support as you work towards your objectives
  5. You are willing to commit to the coaching process
  6. You are willing to be held accountable
  7. You are realistic and honest about your strengths and weaknesses

Seriously. Think about it.  You should be able to answer ‘yes’ to at least 5 of the 7 statements above in my opinion to truly benefit from a partnership with a coach.

What is Executive Coaching?

Executive coaching occurs when a coach collaborates with a manager, team lead, or emerging leader to focus on goals that serve an organization or business.  Executive coaching isn’t just for executives, but it generally good for people who are leading others (or aspire to do so).  Executive coaching positions clients to embrace a leadership development opportunity and hone interpersonal skills; it can provide a valuable support mechanism for those with leadership potential (no longer viewed merely as a ‘fix’ for performance issues as in the past).

I offer Executive Coaching for the employees of organizations that enlist my services.  I offer Personal Coaching services directly to individuals.
